Some people may think a visit to the hygienist is a sign they have a problem with their teeth or gums. The truth is that some time with the hygienist can be beneficial to everybody. While a dentist's focus is to assess your oral health and deal with problems, the focus of a hygienist is to make sure you are improving and maintaining your oral hygiene and health.

They do this by professionally cleaning your teeth by removing the plaque and tartar – usually called a scale and polish. This will teach you and enable you to void the problem of tooth cavities and gingivitis. Severe gum disease accounts for almost one-third of tooth loss in adults. Ensure you get proper teeth cleaning done by experts at least once every six months.

Our hygienists are trained to work hand in hand with the dentists to give personalised care for all our patients. This care covers giving advice, perform mouth cleanings, removing stains and detecting any signs of oral problems like bacteria, plaque and gum disease before they become serious.

Dental Hygienist will treat the problem of gum disease

If there is any build-up of bacteria and tartar on the teeth, this may eventually lead to gum disease. It has been estimated that gum disease affects a large percentage of adults in the UK. The most common gum disease is called gingivitis and is caused when the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth causes inflammation of the gums. Signs of gingivitis include red and puffy gums that bleed easily when a person brushes their teeth.

If gingivitis is not treated it may cause periodontitis where the gums shrink away from the teeth and form spaces that can get infected. If periodontitis is ignored and left untreated at the initial stage, then the tissue, bones and gums supporting the teeth may be destroyed. Your teeth will also become loose in due course and fall out or need to be removed.
